Hunter sought in fatal Austria shooting of mayor
A tragic shooting occurred on Monday morning in the town of Kirchberg-ob-der-Donau, Austria, resulting in the death of the mayor and one other person.
The suspect, known to be a hunter, is considered armed and dangerous and is being actively sought by authorities. Police were alerted by a woman who heard the gunshots, and officers found the mayor's body in a meadow near the town.
Shortly after, the attacker fatally shot another man and absconded from the scene.
Policewoman Ulrike Handbauer stated that authorities are conducting an extensive search operation in the Rohrbach district and surrounding areas. "A large number of investigative officers, tactical teams, and the COBRA special police unit are involved. The attacker is still at large, and we assume he is still armed, thus posing a threat," Handbauer said.
Residents have been urged to stay in their homes and to stay in contact with each other to avoid possible dangers. Additional emergency units have been mobilised in the search for the suspect, including a helicopter and an armoured vehicle. According to initial investigations, the conflict was allegedly triggered by a hunting dispute.
