Rodri wins Ballon d'Or as Manchester City shines
The Spanish midfielder Rodri, a member of the Manchester City team, has been awarded the prestigious ''Ballon d'Or'' trophy, which recognizes the best footballer of the 2023/2024 season.
The awards gala, organised by the magazine ''France Football,'' took place in Paris.
Rodri received this accolade following his success in the Premier League with the Citizens and the European Championship with the Spanish national team.
Arriving on crutches due to a serious injury sustained at the beginning of the season, Rodri attended the ceremony held at the Châtelet Theatre.
"It is a special day for me and my loved ones," he stated. "One day, I told my father that I would quit football because I felt my dream was over. He responded, 'No! Keep going, try until the end.' Today, I am here, and I am proud; I have to thank him."
Rodri outperformed Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior and Englishman Jude Bellingham in the final rankings. Their club, Real Madrid, boycotted the ceremony in the French capital.
In the women's category, Aitana Bonmati triumphed. She was recognized for an exceptional season, during which she won five trophies, including the Champions League, with FC Barcelona.
The award for the youngest player was presented to Lamine Yamal, who is also from FC Barcelona.
