Moldovan Parliament condemns fake emails in election interference

The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova condemns the spread of misinformation being disseminated in its name and urges citizens to disregard any emails received.

In a press release issued on Saturday, the Parliament reported that citizens have been receiving emails allegedly from the institution, urging them to vote for a specific candidate on Sunday with promises of financial compensation from a political party afterward. Citizens are also being encouraged to participate in a "patriotic rally."

"The Parliament of the Republic of Moldova did not send these messages and strongly condemns this attack of false information distributed in its name. We urge citizens to disregard these fraudulent messages, which are intended to create pressure and confusion. We have alerted state institutions about this attack, and an investigation will determine the origin of the email addresses," stated the Parliament’s release.

Additionally, police reported a significant increase in threatening phone calls today. Authorities have advised citizens to ignore these calls, whether they are direct or app-based.

On Friday, several journalists and public figures reportedly received phone calls containing death threats. These calls, whether direct or made through applications, used AI-generated voices of public figures through automated systems.

On Friday evening, Prime Minister Dorin Recean also addressed citizens, urging them not to be intimidated by these threats.

"These acts of intimidation have one purpose: to create panic and fear, discouraging people from voting. Rest assured, state institutions will maintain order and protect citizens. We will remain united and strong. Moldova is on the right path; let us go to the polls with confidence," declared the Prime Minister.
