Maia Sandu conveys a message of condolences following the tragedy in Turkey and Syria
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, sent a message of condolences following the strong earthquake that struck, this morning, the southeast of Turkey, on the border with Syria. In a message published on Twitter, the head of state was "deeply saddened" by the news from Turkey and neighboring countries and expressed her solidarity with all those who suffered as a result of the earthquake.
"I am deeply saddened by the news in Turkey and neighboring countries caused by the devastating earthquake last night. Our thoughts are with all those who suffered in this terrible catastrophe," wrote Maia Sandu on Twitter.
A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 struck central Turkey and northwestern Syria on Monday, killing hundreds of people. Many buildings collapsed in the snow-covered region as rescuers began searching for survivors trapped under the debris. The earthquake, which occurred early in the morning, was also felt in Cyprus and Lebanon.
The earthquake killed more than 500 people and injured at least 1,000 others in Turkey and Syria.
