Spain floods: Death toll rises to 211
The severe floods that struck southeastern Spain last week have claimed the lives of at least 211 people, according to an updated report released Saturday by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, AFP reports.
Rescue teams working in the disaster areas have located and registered 211 fatalities, Prime Minister Sanchez said in an official statement, adding that the search for missing persons remains ongoing.
Prime Minister Sanchez also announced the deployment of an additional 5,000 soldiers to the affected area in the province of Valencia, in eastern Spain. This deployment will be accompanied by an equal number of police officers, bringing the total number of security personnel in the region to 10,000, EFE reports.
The floods, triggered by heavy rains and hail in the Valencia region, have resulted in at least 95 deaths. One Romanian citizen was among the victims, and 15 other Romanian nationals are still missing.
