Unearthing the past: Moldova's hidden treasures go on display
Step back in time at the National Museum of History of Moldova, where a new exhibition reveals fascinating archaeological discoveries from 24 rural communities. Among the highlights is a unique Greek amphora, a rare find unearthed in Manta.
This captivating exhibition, titled "The Artefact from Your Locality," is the result of a collaboration between the National ICOM Committee of Moldova and the Ministry of Culture. The project seeks to raise awareness of Moldova's archaeological heritage, boosting cultural development and rural tourism.
A Showcase of Rural History
The exhibition showcases artefacts from both the National Museum of History and the National Museum of Ethnography. A star attraction is the unique Greek amphora, unearthed in Manta in 1990. This amphora is the only complete piece of its kind discovered in Moldova, offering valuable insights into ancient trade and cultural exchange.
"A vast heritage that is not known in the native localities where they were discovered," says Eugen Mistreanu, project manager. The exhibition aims to change that by bringing these remarkable finds to the forefront.
Engaging Communities in their Past
To further engage communities, the project will provide schools and cultural centres with informative banners showcasing the artefacts. Experts will also deliver public lectures, bringing the past to life for local residents.
"It is the value, it is what expresses us culturally," stated archaeologist Ion Tentiuc. "Some pieces are unique, you can't find them anywhere else."
"This means that people from the villages will know better, will understand what treasure the native land holds," affirms archaeologist Gheorghe Postică.
A Legacy for Future Generations
The "Artefact from Your Locality" exhibition provides a unique opportunity to explore Moldova's lesser-known history. By showcasing these archaeological finds, the project hopes to inspire a deeper understanding of the country's past and encourage cultural tourism in rural communities.
The exhibition runs until November 14th at the National Museum of History of Moldova.
