Preliminary results // Maia Sandu wins a new mandate as president of the Republic of Moldova
After processing 99.5% of the minutes, the PAS candidate, Maia Sandu, wins in the runoff presidential elections with over 55 percent of the votes. His opponent, the PSRM candidate, Alexandr Stoianoglo, gets less than 45%, according to preliminary data presented by the Central Electoral Commission.
When the polls closed, at 21:00, the turnout exceeded 1.68 million people, representing approximately 54% of eligible voters, according to data provided by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC). The Moldovan diaspora participated massively in this election, setting a record of over 325,000 votes. The majority of citizens from abroad voted for Maia Sandu in the second round of the elections.
In the first round, held on October 20, Maia Sandu scored 42% of the votes, but did not manage to reach the absolute majority required for a direct victory, having Alexandr Stoianoglo as the main opponent, who came in second place.
