Moldova elections reveal high stakes amid Russian interference
The presidential elections were influenced by external interference amid significant geopolitical events, during which the Russian Federation sought to reestablish its influence in the Republic of Moldova, according to Vladislav Kulminski, director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives.
The expert explained to Moldova 1 that the stakes are still high for the parliamentary elections in 2025, and the government must address its shortcomings and eliminate the operations of the Shor criminal group. Kulminski notes an unprecedented voter turnout in this election, emphasising that this was a vote by the citizens for the genuine independence of the Republic of Moldova and for the right of Moldovans to determine their own destiny.
This also explains the considerable disparity between the choice made by the diaspora, which tipped the balance and helped save the Republic of Moldova. Now we have the will expressed by the majority of Moldovans that the Republic of Moldova's path is toward the European Union.
This is essentially the first time we have had the voice of the people articulated clearly and unequivocally. According to the expert, in 4-5 years, Moldovans will experience what European standards entail, and EU accession is expected to occur in 2029. Conditions in the Republic of Moldova will change significantly, and people will come to realise that European integration does not entail endless political struggles or media battles but rather signifies standards of living and economic opportunities.
However, Kulminski believes that vote tampering has skewed the results. The interference had a significant impact on the voting results. These elections were unprecedented in the independent history of the Republic of Moldova, taking place amidst significant geopolitical events and a redistribution of influence. It was also an attempt by the Russian Federation to reestablish control over the Republic of Moldova and to obstruct its European path.
The director of IIS warns that the stakes are still high for the parliamentary elections in 2025, where the party proposals will be diverse and the vote will be fragmented, which is why the ruling party must prepare thoroughly. If this criminal network associated with Ilan Shor continues to operate, next year's elections will not be free and fair.
All institutions must be proactive because this concerns the influx of cash and involves a technologically advanced network operating online that is difficult to detect.
