NATO chief: U.S. won’t abandon alliance, regardless of election
The new NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, has expressed confidence that regardless of the outcome of the U.S. presidential election—whether Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris or former Republican President Donald Trump—America will remain committed to NATO.
“Democrats, like Republicans—and Harris as well as Trump—support NATO because they understand that the Alliance secures not only Europe but also the United States,” Rutte said in an interview on German public television.
Rutte argued that if Russia were to gain greater influence over this part of Europe—including Germany, the Netherlands, and Western Europe—it would pose a direct threat to U.S. security.
A potential Trump victory in the presidential election raises several questions. During the campaign, the Republican candidate reiterated that European partners do not “pay” adequately for the security they receive, adding that the United States could potentially suspend the well-known Article 5 of collective security for NATO members who do not make sufficient financial contributions.
Furthermore, he suggested that he might drastically reduce or even halt U.S. military support for Ukraine—the largest of its kind currently—in an effort to bring about a quick end to the war triggered by Russia’s unprovoked invasion of its neighbouring country.
In the event of a victory by Vice President Kamala Harris, it is expected that the Democratic candidate will continue the Biden administration’s Atlanticist policy and maintain substantial military support for Ukraine.
