Jānis Mažeiks: The Republic of Moldova proved political maturity, but we must remain vigilant
The recent elections and constitutional referendum in the Republic of Moldova have been described as a "success," despite attempts at external interference. In an interview on "Dimineata cu Radio Moldova," the Ambassador of the European Union in Chisinau, Jānis Mažeiks, said that the elections showcased the country's democratic progress. However, he cautioned that challenges still lie ahead.
“Unfortunately, we have witnessed substantial attempts at external interference in elections and referendums, and much evidence has already been presented by the police regarding this involvement. Therefore, judicial procedures must be completed in cases where arrests have been made for alleged vote buying. We also greatly appreciate the work of independent media for exposing this interference,” declared Jānis Mažeiks.
Additionally, the diplomat referred to the economic growth plan announced by the European Commission and highlighted three major priorities: investments in infrastructure, increased access for Moldovan companies to the single European market, and the continuation of economic and judicial reforms.
"Two-thirds of Moldova's exports go to the European Union, which is by far the largest market for your producers. However, we see significant room for improvement so that even more Moldovan producers can benefit, for example, by facilitating payments through the Single Euro Payments Area," the ambassador added.
Mažeiks also welcomed the progress made by Moldova in the 31 chapters of negotiation with the EU but he emphasized the need for continued efforts.
“It is about strengthening the justice system and fighting corruption, as well as addressing smaller issues like improving inter-institutional cooperation, eliminating unjustified trade barriers, and enhancing legislation across various sectors. This is, for us, the most important document of the year concerning expansion,” the official stated.
Furthermore, the ambassador expressed optimism regarding Moldova's European path: "The accession process is complex, but I am confident that Moldova will continue to make progress."
