Saint Great Martyr Dumitru, celebrated by Orthodox Christians today
Today, Orthodox Christians honor Saint Dumitru, the Great Martyr, one of the most beloved saints of the Orthodox Church. The holiday is an occasion for prayer and gratitude for the help offered in difficult moments of life.
Demetrius or Dumitru, the son of the Roman proconsul from Thessaloniki, lived during the time of the emperors Diocletian and Galerius. He was secretly baptised by his parents, who were Christians. Dimitrie became a preacher, while continuing his military career. Because he blessed a young soldier to face the vandal Lie, who was killing Christians without mercy, Saint Dumitru was killed by order of the emperor, and his body was left to wild beasts. He was canonised as a great martyr.
In many localities in the Republic of Moldova, Hram is celebrated. People gather to participate in religious services and festive events organized on this occasion. From rich meals prepared in households to concerts in the center of the village.
Saint Demetrius is known as the protector of those in need, and prayers to him are considered to be of great help, especially in times of trial.
