The Republic of Moldova could start EU accession negotiations by the end of the year. Roberta Metsola: "As fast as possible, so that the pace keeps up with the ambition"
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Natalia Gavrilița, hopes that the Republic of Moldova will start accession negotiations to the European Union by the end of this year. The head of the Government from Chisinau declares that the authorities "are not looking for any short cuts" and assures that all the recommendations and conditions imposed will be implemented. For her part, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola is confident that our country could start pre-accession negotiations in 2023. According to the high European official, our country "deserves to be part of the European family".
"We hope that the negotiations will start as soon as possible, by the end of this year. (…) We are not looking for any short cuts, we understand very well that these conditions are important reforms that must bring benefits and advantages primarily to the people of the Republic of Moldova", said Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița. The speed with which the Republic of Moldova manages to implement the European Union's conditionalities in order to start the accession negotiations was welcomed, in Brussels, by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The high European official assures that our country can count on the unconditional support of the EU in the accession process. Moreover, when asked if the Republic of Moldova can start pre-accession negotiations this year, Roberta Metsola stated: "My answer is yes, as quickly as possible, so that the pace can keep up with the ambition." "We welcome the speed with which the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine moved to the necessary reforms, they organized themselves in such a way that all stages could be completed. Of course, each country follows its own course and the accession process involves many stages, but we will be there with you at each of these stages. (...) The Republic of Moldova deserves to be a part of the European Union. We must remain united and strong," said Roberta Metsola. We remind you that the Republic of Moldova received the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union on June 23. In order to start the actual negotiations with a view to joining the EU, the Republic of Moldova must fulfill the nine recommendations issued by the European Commission in June. The targeted areas are: justice, combating corruption and organized crime, de-oligarization, public administration and public services reform, public finance management, strengthening the role of civil society in decision-making processes and protecting human rights.
