Austria may back Romania and Bulgaria’s Schengen accession
Austria may approve the full accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area, according to Radio România Actualități.
A summit will be held on November 22 in Budapest, with Austria, Romania, and Bulgaria participating. During this summit, Austrian authorities may reconsider their stance on the full accession of both countries to the Schengen Area.
The decision on accession could be announced on December 12, at the upcoming Justice and Home Affairs Council, according to the same source.
The Austrian Minister of the Interior has confirmed his attendance at the summit alongside his Romanian and Bulgarian counterparts, adding that discussions with both countries are ongoing.
He emphasised that the essential condition for the full accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen Area is the effective protection of external borders, with internal border controls to be reinstated if necessary.
