Ursula von der Leyen: The Republic of Moldova can count on EU support
The Republic of Moldova can continue to count on the support of the European Union, assures the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. The statement was made by the top European official after the meeting with Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, in Brussels.
"Moldova can continue to count on the EU, I told Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița. We proposed €145 million in new funding just last week and continue to support your economy and energy security. As the Republic of Moldova progresses on the path of EU reform, we are working to bring you closer to our single market," wrote Ursula von der Leyen on her Twitter account.
The support for the Republic of Moldova, including on the way to join the European Union, was confirmed in the afternoon of today including by the President of the European Parliament (EP), Roberta Metsola. The official stated, during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița, that the EP will fulfill its obligations regarding the additional financial support, in the amount of 145 million euros, announced more than a week ago by The European Commission.
"The European Parliament will fulfill its obligations regarding the 145 million euro, macro-financial support package, which brings the total support for Moldova to around 600 million euro. The first steps will be taken at the plenary in Strasbourg next week, because we know that these resources are urgently needed now. (...) The European Union is and remains with your country", said Roberta Metsola.
For her part, Natalia Gavrilița thanked the European Union for the constant support offered to our country, especially in the context of the energy crisis and the border war.
We remind you that the European Commission announced, on January 24, the increase of macro-financial assistance for the Republic of Moldova by up to 145 million euros. According to the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the new financial support will support the economy and energy security of the Republic of Moldova. The amount is to be paid in two additional installments planned for the third and fourth quarters of 2023.
