Moldovan citizen recounts horror of Spain's deadly floods

The recent floods in Spain have caused devastating damage, with a Moldovan citizen, Nicolae Bulmaga, being among the affected.

Bulmaga, who resides in the city of Murcia, owns a truck that has provided him with a steady income. Today, however, he reports that everything has come to a halt, and he is now waiting for government assistance to recover his flooded truck.

Nicolae Bulmaga has been living in Spain for over 23 years. He works in the national transport sector and owns a truck used to transport goods. The floodwaters caught him in the heart of Valencia, where he witnessed what he describes as a real-life horror film.

“While heading home with a friend, we reached an area in Valencia where trucks were backed up. We stopped dead in our tracks, and within a quarter of an hour, the water started rising, just like in a horror movie. In less than 30 minutes, the water had reached two metres. We had no place to move or escape. We stayed in the cabin and prayed to God,” Bulmaga recounts.

He witnessed the full scale of the disaster firsthand. According to Bulmaga, the most terrifying moment occurred when he tried to call his loved ones, but the phone lines and internet were no longer functioning.

“How did we manage to get out? We waited until the water had completely receded, leaving only the mud behind. Then we got out and moved away from the trucks. When you see what’s happening but can't get in touch with your loved ones, it’s horrifying. About 150-200 metres to our left, the next day, three bodies were pulled from cars—three dead. Many others are still missing. Now we are waiting for the assessor to evaluate the damage,” Bulmaga shared.

A week ago, heavy rains struck Valencia, leaving roads and entire cities submerged. Numerous videos shared on social media that night showed people trapped by the rising waters, some climbing trees to avoid being swept away. Spanish authorities have declared this to be the most severe flood disaster in Europe in the last five decades.

On Saturday, a large number of people gathered in Valencia to protest, demanding the resignation of regional leader Carlos Mazon. Among the victims of the floods, there are also seven Romanian citizens.
