Moldova to introduce new electronic identity card in 2025
Starting in the spring of 2025, citizens of the Republic of Moldova will receive a new identity card – a modernised electronic version that will replace the current documents.
This decision, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, is expected to bring several improvements to the daily lives of Moldovan citizens.
The new identity card will include an electronic chip that will store the holder's personal data, including a qualified certificate for electronic signatures.
This change will allow Moldovans to access both government and private electronic services online, eliminating the need to visit institutions in person.
Furthermore, Moldovan citizens abroad will have access to the same services, regardless of their location.
Another important benefit of the new identity card is the elimination of the need to replace the document in the event of a change of address, as the residence visa will no longer be included. In addition, cardholders will be able to sign electronic documents, including contracts, with their signatures being valid and recognized throughout the European Union.
