Children’s Ombudsman urges Moldova to protect kids from violence
The Children’s Ombudsman urges public authorities to make every necessary effort to establish a safe and protective environment for all children in the Republic of Moldova. This is the appeal made by the People’s Advocate for Children’s Rights, Vasile Coroi, following an incident of violence against a one-year-old child.
He emphasises the importance of providing support to parents through specialised services and raising community awareness about protecting children from all forms of violence.
In this context, Vasile Coroi reminds us that, under the provisions of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, parents or legal guardians are primarily responsible for the upbringing and development of the child, while the state is obligated to provide them with all necessary support to fulfil this role.
Additionally, Article 19 of the same Convention underscores the obligation of states to take all necessary measures to protect children from violence, abuse, or neglect, whether it occurs within the family or in other settings.
It is worth noting that a mother was filmed violently hitting her one-year-old daughter. The police were alerted by the child’s father, who noticed bruises on the child’s body, prompting him to install surveillance cameras in their home. The footage was posted on social media, showing the mother’s violent actions. A criminal case was initiated, and a restraining order was issued against the woman for 90 days, during which she is prohibited from approaching the child.
