Presidential elections in Romania. Over 18 million Romanians are expected to vote on Sunday
Over 18 million Romanians in the country are expected, on Sunday, November 24, 2024, to vote in the first round of the presidential elections, with 14 candidates on the ballot paper. The almost 19,000 polling stations on the territory of Romania opened at 7:00 and close at 21:00, with the possibility of extension until 23:59 for those in the headquarters or in line outside the polling station. Abroad, there are almost one million Romanians with the right to vote in this election, reports news.ro.
The Permanent Electoral Authority reported that the total number of voters registered on the permanent electoral lists for the election of the President of Romania, on November 24, 2024, is 18,008,480 citizens, and that of Romanians residing abroad who are entitled to vote in this election is 989,230 people. According to the AEP, 19,365 citizens are prohibited from voting in the election on Sunday, November 24.
Also, 6,721 Romanian citizens abroad opted for postal voting by registering on the website votstrainatate.ro and registered on the permanent electoral lists abroad for postal voting, and 6,589 Romanian citizens abroad opted for voting at the polling station by registering on the website votstrainatate.ro and are registered on the permanent electoral lists abroad.
The Permanent Electoral Authority data show, on the territory of Romania, a number of 18,968 polling stations, and abroad 950 polling stations. In the country, voting at the 18,968 polling stations takes place on Sunday, November 24, between 07:00 and 21:00, with the possibility of extension until 23:59 for citizens who, at 21:00, are in the polling station headquarters, as well as for those who are in line outside the polling station headquarters to enter the polling station.
Voting abroad started on Friday, November 22, 2024, and took place between 12:00 and 21:00, while on Saturday, November 23, 2024, voting began at 7:00 and ended at 21:00. On Sunday, November 24, 2024, polling stations abroad are open during the same hours, 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. For each of the three voting days abroad, there is a possibility of extending the poll's schedule until 11:59 p.m. for citizens who, at 9:00 p.m., are in the polling station headquarters, as well as for those who are in line outside the polling station headquarters to enter the building where they vote.
In the Republic of Moldova, persons with Romanian citizenship are expected to vote in one of the 59 polling stations open on the territory of the country. According to information presented by the Embassy of Romania in the Republic of Moldova, 17 polling stations are organized in the northern region of the country, 34 polling stations in the central region, of which 16 in the city of Chisinau, and eight polling stations in the southern region.
Necessary identity documents to vote
Voters vote with an identity document valid on voting day, issued by the Romanian state, namely: identity card; electronic identity card; provisional identity card; diplomatic passport; electronic diplomatic passport; service passport; electronic service passport; military service card (in the case of students in military schools).
According to the AEP, it is important to know that the simple passport, the simple electronic passport and the temporary simple passport can be used to exercise the right to vote only by Romanian citizens voting abroad or by Romanian citizens residing abroad voting in Romania.
How many candidates have registered for the presidential race
In this year's presidential elections, 14 candidates are listed on the ballot papers, ten of whom are supported by parties and four are independent candidates. The order of candidates on the ballot papers for the 2024 Romanian presidential elections is as follows:
