Latvia: Fire at a US drone factory for Ukraine

On Tuesday afternoon a fire broke out in Riga at a US factory producing surveillance and reconnaissance drones for NATO armies and Ukraine, AFP reports.

At least two people were hospitalised with injuries from the fire, which swept through much of the main building of the industrial site, owned by US firm Edge Autonomy.

"Ambulances transported two injured people to hospital, while a third person received emergency medical care at the scene," the Latvian emergency medical service tweeted.

About 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene of the fire on the outskirts of the Latvian capital, from where thick clouds of smoke were rising. On Tuesday evening, firefighters and rescuers reported that the fire in the production building, which was burning over an area of 600 square metres, was under control.

Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Based in San Luis Obispo, California, Edge Autonomy specialises in autonomous systems, advanced optics and energy solutions.

Edge Autonomy's Riga plant also houses the group's European headquarters, according to its website.
