Deputy from Gagauzia, convicted of influence peddling: fine of 175,000 lei and confiscation of 240,000 lei
A deputy from the territorial administrative unit (UTA) Gagauzia was fined 175,000 lei and had over 240,000 lei, the equivalent of 12,000 euros, confiscated for committing the crime of influence peddling. The decision was made by the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani, on November 26, 2024, informs the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
According to the source, during the period 2019-2021, the deputy allegedly received money from a denouncer, to whom he promised that he could influence a judge to obtain a favourable decision in a civil case. However, the case was not settled in favour of the denouncer, who later complained to the authorities.
The criminal investigation was managed by the National Anticorruption Center and the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, and the trial lasted for a year. The sentence can be appealed to the Chisinau Court of Appeal within 15 days.
