Next year we could have electricity disconnections lasting several hours, Recean
Prime Minister Dorin Recean discussed a pessimistic scenario regarding electricity supply during the "Punctul pe azi" show on TVR Moldova. He stated that starting in January 2025, there could be electricity disconnections lasting several hours if gas is not delivered to the Cuciurgan power plant, which generates electricity for the right bank of the Nistru.
"While we might experience some disconnections, they will be measured in hours, not weeks or months. These disconnections could occur due to a technical necessity to adapt our electricity imports through Romania in the worst-case scenario. We will need to establish ' interconnections' at the western border of Moldova with the Romanian energy system using 110 kV lines, which are isolated from the 400 kV lines that could be affected by potential disruptions in Ukraine", said Recean.
The Prime Minister added that this situation would arise if Gazprom fails to meet its contractual obligations and natural gas is not delivered to the left bank for electricity production.
"Initially, we will purchase electricity from the West through Romania, either from Romania itself or other neighboring countries, using the Isaccea-Vulcănești connections and eventually from the northern lines as well. Additionally, we will work to increase local electricity production, including at Termoelectrica in Chisinau and other available power plants. We may also activate the Costești hydroelectric power plant to its fullest potential, as well as ensure that all renewable wind and photovoltaic energy is supplied to the local market", said Dorin Recean.
Furthermore, Recean mentioned that they are also exploring the possibility of purchasing and delivering natural gas to Cuciurgan to produce at least part of the electricity needed for the right bank of the Nistru.
