Experts warn of unprecedented and dangerous decision by Romania's Constitutional Court

The recent decision by the Constitutional Court of Romania has been described as unprecedented and potentially dangerous for democracy, said the expert from Bucharest Laurențiu Pleșca during his Zi de Zi show on Radio Moldova. He emphasized the need for authorities from Romania to develop an action plan to prevent a recurrence of this situation.

Pleșca noted that the Romanian authorities acted too late, as they only presented evidence on Wednesday, which led to the court's decision coinciding with election day for the diaspora.

"What is happening now is very serious. The Romanian state must adopt strict legislation before holding any future elections. Additionally, support from multiple parties is necessary to condemn the severe actions of Russian interference in the electoral process in Romania", said Laurentiu Plesca.

Expert Mihai Isac added that the next presidential election could be held within a maximum of 90 days. He pointed out that the High Court's decision might provoke protests, but the majority of society would prefer to continue the electoral process. "We will see the impact of this decision on forming a parliamentary majority, but there are likely to be intense political weeks on the Eastern flank of the European Union. This unprecedented decision will influence how future elections are organized, and several rules regarding electoral promotion will probably change. We can expect an announcement regarding the election date by spring, with the upcoming winter holidays in Romania and the European Union also factored in", said Isac.

He pointed aut that the lessons learned by Romania will be studied by its partners. Unfortunately, Isac indicated that the authorities in Bucharest did not sufficiently consider situations in the Republic of Moldova and Bulgaria and overlooked the manipulative tactics by the Russian Federation, which is taking advantage of democratic systems where diverse opinions are encouraged and respected.

We remind you that this evening, the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the presidential elections after declassified information from Romanian intelligence agencies revealed that the country had been targeted by a hybrid attack organized by a foreign state actor. As a result of this court ruling, the entire electoral process will restart from scratch.
