Romanian politician accused of illicit TikTok campaign
Raids are underway in Brașov, Romania, targeting Bogdan Peșchir, who is suspected of illegally financing Călin Georgescu's TikTok campaign with one million euros.
Prosecutors are investigating allegations of voter bribery, money laundering, computer fraud, and the promotion of fascist, racist, or xenophobic organizations and symbols. The investigation focuses on a person suspected of illegally financing a presidential candidate's campaign using funds allegedly obtained through criminal activities and then laundered.
Raids have been conducted at Peșchir's residence. He is accused of using the TikTok account "bogpr" to donate over one million euros to promote Georgescu's campaign. TikTok confirmed that the "bogpr" account made payments totaling $381,000 to accounts promoting Georgescu, even after the election ended.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis declassified documents revealing that Georgescu's rise was fueled by a social media campaign and algorithmic manipulation aimed at influencing the election.
