Constitution Day 2024: Enache's call for unity and democracy
Marian Enache, President of the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR), delivered a message on Constitution Day emphasizing the importance of honoring the Fundamental Law through respect and loyalty to the nation.
He highlighted that this year's observance marked the 101st anniversary of the 1923 Constitution, which defined the role of the Romanian state and citizens' rights in a modern European context.
Enache pointed out that despite historical challenges, the core principles of the 1923 Constitution—human rights, the separation of powers, and individual freedom—survived and were restored in the 1991 Constitution.
He urged respect for democratic values and the rule of law as crucial for societal stability. Enache underscored the need to counter forces that threaten democracy and called for unity to defend these values. He also reminded citizens to promote truth and uphold the Constitution amidst manipulation and misinformation.
The CCR will continue to protect citizens' fundamental rights. The message concluded with a call to honor constitutional traditions in alignment with European values, ensuring the democratic future of Romania.
Constitution Day, celebrated on December 8, marks the adoption of the 1991 Constitution, approved by a national referendum with over 77% approval.
