Los Angeles Galaxy wins record sixth MLS title in thrilling final

The Los Angeles Galaxy has been crowned the new champion of Major League Soccer.

After a 10-year drought, Greg Vanney’s team broke its streak of misfortune and set a new record with six trophies in the competition. In the grand final, held on their home turf, LA Galaxy secured a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.

The hosts made a strong start, with Ghanaian forward Joseph Paintsil breaking the deadlock in the 9th minute. Just four minutes later, Serbian forward Dejan Joveljic extended the Californian team’s lead with a masterful strike.

The New York Red Bulls pulled one back in the 28th minute, thanks to Sean Nealis. Despite their best efforts, the New York-based team struggled to create significant opportunities in the second half, enabling Los Angeles Galaxy to clinch their sixth MLS title.

Marco Reus, the legendary former Borussia Dortmund player, marked a milestone in his career. Substituted into the game in the 75th minute, the German midfielder celebrated his first championship title. Reus had previously been a runner-up in the Bundesliga seven times, coming closest to victory in 2023 when Dortmund narrowly missed out on the title. His contract with the California franchise extends through the end of 2026.
