Moldovan citizens will continue to benefit from the visa-free regime with the EU. Report of the European Commission
The European Commission has released its seventh report on the Visa Suspension Mechanism, confirming that the Republic of Moldova has made progress in implementing the recommendations from previous reports. This means that Moldovan citizens will still have access to the visa-free regime for travel to Schengen area states.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the report provides a comprehensive assessment of various factors, including the alignment of Moldova's visa policies with EU standards; trends in illegal migration; applications for international protection; return and readmission policies; and cooperation in migration management, border security, and overall security. The document also references the EU's relationships with neighboring countries, the Eastern Caribbean, and Latin America. Furthermore, it offers specific recommendations for each country benefiting from the visa-free regime.
For the Republic of Moldova, the recommendations include:
Aligning visa policies with those of the European Union, especially concerning third countries that may pose risks of illegal migration or security threats to the EU.
Continuing efforts to combat organized crime, particularly focusing on illicit trafficking in firearms and drugs, human trafficking, and the financial aspects of organized crime.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs acknowledges the findings and recommendations in the report and expresses its commitment to work alongside other national authorities to implement these measures in cooperation with the European Union.
These recommendations are aligned with Moldova's status as a candidate country for EU accession. The topics covered in the annual reports on the Visa Suspension Mechanism will also be monitored through the European Commission's annual enlargement packages for 2023 and 2024.
Since the introduction of the visa-free regime for short-term travel, over 2.5 million Moldovans have benefited from it, making more than 15.8 million trips to the EU in the past ten years.
