Biden considers tougher sanctions on Russian oil exports
The administration of the U.S. President Joe Biden is exploring the possibility of tightening sanctions on Russia's oil exports, as reported by Bloomberg and cited by DW. The measure aims to intensify pressure on the Kremlin, especially in the context of preparations for Donald Trump's potential return to the White House.
Sources familiar with the process told Bloomberg that the new sanctions could target various forms of oil exports from Russia. The White House is also considering sanctions against the "shadow fleet" used by Moscow to bypass the price cap on Russian oil.
The Biden administration had previously hesitated to adopt such measures out of concern that they might raise energy prices. However, the recent decline in oil prices and worries that Donald Trump might pressure Ukraine to make concessions to Russia have prompted a shift toward stricter measures, according to Bloomberg.
These potential sanctions would represent a shift in the U.S. approach toward Russia, aimed at undermining the Kremlin’s oil revenues and limiting its capacity to fund the war in Ukraine. The final decisions are expected to be announced soon.
