LIVE // Volodymyr Zelenskiy delivers a speech in the European Parliament

Volodymyr Zelenskiy is giving a speech in the European Parliament and will participate as a guest in the extraordinary meeting of the European Council, which takes place on Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was applauded in Brussels on Thursday by MEPs, who gave him a standing ovation in the plenary session of the European Parliament, before his speech, reports AFP. Zelenski was received by the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola.

"This parliament has stood by Ukraine from day one and we will confirm today (Thursday - n.r.) that we will continue to stand by Ukraine until victory," Metsola told the press shortly before Zelenski's arrival.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, greeted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his arrival in Brussels on Thursday, reports dpa. "Welcome home, welcome to the EU," tweeted Charles Michel. "Welcome to Brussels. We will support Ukraine in every step of its path to the Union", wrote Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.

Volodymyr Zelensky was in London on Wednesday, where he obtained a promise from Great Britain to train Ukrainian military pilots to use Western fighter jets. In the evening, Zelenski was in Paris where he received assurances from the presidents of France and Germany of military and humanitarian support. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for heavy weaponry and aircraft "as soon as possible".
