EU approves Schengen expansion: Romania, Bulgaria in

EU interior ministers greenlit Romania and Bulgaria's full accession to the Schengen Area, effective January 1, 2025. The move will allow for free movement across land borders between the two countries and other Schengen members, according to an official statement.

"This strengthens the Schengen Area, boosting the internal market and fostering travel, trade, and tourism. A robust Schengen enhances EU unity and global influence," stated the European Commission.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed her enthusiasm: "It's done! Romania and Bulgaria will be full Schengen members from January 1, 2025. Congratulations to both nations for their hard work. A stronger Schengen means a safer, more united Europe."

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen simply tweeted: "Fully in Schengen - where you belong."

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis hailed the decision as a long-awaited milestone: "Romania is now a full Schengen member. This is a natural step for our country, and it will benefit our economy and image."

Romanian Interior Minister Cătălin Predoiu pledged Romania's commitment to strengthening the Schengen Area: "We'll continue to be a loyal and solid partner. Our citizens deserve this moment."

After years of opposition, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Austria finally backed Romania and Bulgaria's bid. Austria's change of heart was attributed to a significant decrease in illegal migration.

While full border controls will be lifted on January 1, 2025, the Schengen Border Code allows for temporary reintroduction of controls under exceptional circumstances.

Romania and Bulgaria initially joined Schengen in March 2024, with the lifting of air and sea border controls.
