Moldova awaits 2026 World Cup Draw
Current and former Moldovan national team players have differing opinions about their preferred opponents for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Some have expressed a desire to face top-tier teams and star players, while others prioritize competitive matches and a positive team atmosphere.
As the draw for the 2026 World Cup European qualifiers approaches, Moldova is placed in the fifth pot and will be part of a five-team group. National team captain Vadim Rață and former players Ion Jardan and Viorel Frunză have expressed their preferences for potential opponents from the top seed pot.
“I’d love to play against England. I’ve been a fan since I was a child,” said Rață.
“I hope we draw a strong team to make it a memorable occasion. I’d love to see Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo,” stated Jardan.
“We wouldn’t mind facing Spain or Portugal. They’re both strong teams with similar styles of play. It’ll be a tough challenge for the players, but we’ll enjoy the spectacle,” said Frunză.
In contrast, goalkeeper Cristian Avram and Andrei Martin, coach of the national champion Petrocub Hâncești, prioritize the team’s performance and development.
“We’re a team sport, not focused on individuals. No matter who we play, we’ll strive to win,” said Avram.
“I don’t have a specific opponent in mind. I want our players to reach their full potential,” said Martin.
The draw will take place at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, on Friday, December 13, at 1 pm.
