Teachers in the Republic of Moldova go on strike: they demand salaries equal to the economy average
Teachers in the Republic of Moldova are organizing a protest in front of the Parliament today, December 13, starting at 10:00 AM. They are dissatisfied because authorities have not included their requests for salary increases in the draft state budget for 2025.
The Trade Union Federation of Education and Science states that teachers want their salaries in the education and research sectors to be equal to the projected average salary in the economy for next year, which is 16,100 lei.
Additional protests are planned for December 19, and flash mobs will be held in schools nationwide to highlight their demands.
Demands from the Trade Union Federation:
- Establish a reference salary of 2,900 lei for teaching, scientific-didactic, research, and management staff.
- Establish a reference salary of 2,640 lei for non-teaching staff.
- Pay the bonus for 2024 as stipulated in Article 21, Law 270/2018.
- Provide a clear and supportive legislative framework to ensure a consistent and equitable increase in income for education personnel, based on their level of training, experience, and performance.
To reach a compromise, the unions propose starting negotiations with an increase of 200 lei for non-teaching staff and 300 lei for teaching, scientific-didactic, research, and management staff.
As a result, the reference salaries would rise from 2,100 to 2,300 lei for non-teaching staff and from 2,300 to 2,600 lei for teaching, scientific-didactic, research, and management staff.
