Chisinau reacts after Tiraspol called for negotiations with Russia and Ukraine: "We are taking all necessary steps for the citizens"
The constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova are taking all necessary steps to solve the energy issue, with the priority of protecting citizens on both banks of the Nistru, the Reintegration Policy Bureau announced. On the other hand, the alleged administration in Tiraspol is proposing a joint appeal to Russia and Ukraine to guarantee the continuation of natural gas transit, citing increased risks to energy security this winter.
"The Republic of Moldova, within its internationally recognized borders, is responsible for the destinies of all its citizens, regardless of ethnic origin, spoken language, political preferences or place of residence. In such situations, it is important to avoid any propaganda slippages and political speculations of the situation," the Reintegration Policy Bureau announced.
On the other hand, Tiraspol believes that a joint appeal to Russia and Ukraine would be essential to prevent a humanitarian crisis. According to a statement by the region’s so-called foreign ministry, the supplied gas is vital for the production of electricity, which is also used by the Republic of Moldova. “We hope that such an appeal, based on considerations of humanity and care for people, will contribute to making decisions that guarantee the transit of natural gas,” reads the statement.
Tiraspol’s proposal comes in the context in which the Republic of Moldova has established a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. While Chisinau announced that the right bank of the Nistru has sufficient natural gas reserves for the winter, the situation in the Transnistrian region remains uncertain. Moldovan officials stressed that they will seek solutions to support citizens on the left bank of the Nistru, if Gazprom decides to stop deliveries.
