Deadly cyclone hits Mayotte: Widespread damage

A devastating cyclone, the strongest in a century, struck the French territory of Mayotte on Saturday, causing widespread damage and at least 14 deaths, according to CNN.

Located off the east coast of Africa, west of Madagascar, Mayotte, comprising two main islands, is roughly twice the size of Washington, D.C.

Cyclone Chido, a Category 4 storm, swept across the southwest Indian Ocean over the weekend, impacting northern Madagascar before intensifying and striking Mayotte with wind gusts exceeding 135 mph (220 km/h), according to the French meteorological service, Meteo-France.

It was the most powerful storm to strike the islands in over 90 years, according to Meteo-France. The cyclone devastated entire neighborhoods, knocked out power grids, damaged hospitals and schools, and even crippled the airport's control tower. As of that morning, Mayotte had been almost completely offline for more than 36 hours, according to NetBlocks, highlighting the extensive damage to infrastructure and communication networks.
