Israeli airstrikes target Syrian Tartus region amid tensions

The Israeli military has resumed airstrikes on military bases in the Syrian coastal region of Tartus.

Israeli fighter jets targeted air defense bases, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an NGO quoted by DPA.

These were the heaviest attacks on the Tartus region, which hosts a significant Russian naval base. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reassured U.S. President-elect Donald Trump that Israel had no intention of provoking a war in Syria, despite the country having "always been an enemy state."

The uncertain situation that followed the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime is being discussed today by the EU foreign ministers, convening for the first time since Kaja Kallas was appointed High Representative for EU Foreign Affairs.

In addition to agreeing on a common policy regarding Syrian refugees in EU countries, the foreign ministers will discuss the possibility of establishing diplomatic contacts with the rebel forces that have taken control of Damascus. Kallas has already announced in Brussels that the EU will send a special envoy to Syria on Monday.

The country should not repeat the "terrifying scenarios" seen in Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, warned the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, as quoted by Reuters.
