Secretary of State: Farmers' claims are being examined by the Government

Farmers' claims are under examination, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Sergiu Gherciu, told Moldova 1 TV. The official assured that the project has been developed, which is in the approval phase for the licensing procedure for the import of cereals, as well as a new credit mechanism for small and medium-sized farmers, with a fixed interest rate of 5.1%. Also, the subsidy debts for 2024 and 2023 will be paid at the beginning of the new year.

"This is not the first meeting with farmers in which we discuss the problems they face. The Ministry is permanently committed to supporting farmers in all branches of agriculture and is involved in developing policies and finding sustainable solutions to all their problems. We also know that previously, 100 million were allocated from the Reserve Fund, with the support of the Government, to compensate for the losses caused by the drought this year.”

According to the Secretary of State, the payments of subsidies for 2023-2024 will be provided in the first days of 2025. “Regarding the claims made by farmers, they insist on extending the license for the import of cereals and oilseeds until December 2025. The Ministry has already initiated the procedure for extending the license for the import of cereals into the Republic of Moldova. The deadline is not December 31, but June 2025, with the possibility of an extension. By the end of the year, the extension of licensing for the import of cereals will be approved. As for the development of a refinancing guarantee mechanism for 2025, there will be a new credit mechanism for small and medium-sized farmers, with a fixed interest rate of 5.1%.

We remind you that farmers protested in front of the Government on Wednesday morning. Farmers are also demanding the urgent approval of the draft drought law, the extension of the licensing of grain and oilseed imports until December 31, 2025, as well as the payment of subsidy debts for last year. The demonstrations ended with scuffles between protesters and law enforcement officers after the farmers were not allowed to enter the Government building. Later, the protesters were invited to the ministry.
