Premier Energy announces scheduled power outages in Moldova

Premier Energy, the largest electricity supplier in the Republic of Moldova, serving consumers in the central and southern parts of the country, is preparing a plan for scheduled power outages that could be implemented starting January 1.

Considering the likelihood of the suspension of natural gas supplies to the left bank of the Dniester starting January 1, 2025, along with the current uncertainty in the energy context and the need to ensure the continuity of electricity supply, Premier Energy Distribution SA informs consumers that it has prepared a plan for scheduled outages, in line with the Action Plan for Exceptional Situations in the Electric Power Sector.

Premier Energy specifies that this plan will not affect "vital consumers," as defined by government decree. Therefore, electricity will continue to be supplied without interruption to households, businesses, and institutions providing essential public services, including kindergartens, hospitals, schools, and government offices.

The outage program will be implemented only in the event of a power deficit in the system, with adjustments made based on the severity and duration of the deficit, and will be applied in a fair and proportional manner to final electricity consumers.

Additionally, Premier Energy highlights the risks of uncontrolled power outages due to the power deficit in the joint Ukraine-Moldova energy system.

Since December 16, a state of emergency has been declared across the entire Republic of Moldova for a period of 60 days. The country is facing the risk of an energy crisis if the Russian energy company Gazprom cuts natural gas supplies to the Transnistrian region. Authorities have warned that this situation could lead to a humanitarian crisis on the left bank of the Dniester, where approximately 300,000 people reside. Additionally, the energy crisis could result in power outages and increased prices on the right bank of the Dniester, officials have added.
