Ex-SIS officer faces charges for embezzling over 250,000 lei
A former employee of the Moldovan Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) has been accused of complicity in embezzling more than 250,000 lei (~13,000 euro).
According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, in 2021, an intelligence officer from SIS, together with another former employee of the same institution, embezzled approximately 250,000 lei that was intended for special investigative measures. The funds were allegedly transferred as a loan to the other employee for personal use.
The former investigative officer confessed to his guilt and requested the termination of the criminal investigation under the Amnesty Law, which was enacted on the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Moldova's independence, and was granted amnesty. However, his accomplice did not confess to his guilt and did not request the application of the amnesty. The criminal case against him has been sent for trial at the Chișinău Court, Buiucani branch.
The crime was uncovered by SIS during an unannounced inspection, and in December 2021, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal case.
The law provides for a fine ranging from 42,500 to 67,500 lei (2,217.42 - 3,521.79 euro) or imprisonment from 2 to 6 years for complicity in the crime, in both cases accompanied by the deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in specific activities for up to 5 years. Additionally, a seizure was placed on part of a property belonging to the accused, valued at over 67,000 lei.
