Moldova: Hospitals ready for power outages

All public hospitals in Moldova are equipped with backup generators to ensure continued operation during power outages.

The Ministry of Health reports that hospitals currently have 201 generators on site. These generators have been inspected, tested, and are fully operational, ensuring a reliable power supply during outages.

In response to a request from Teleradio-Moldova, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the generators ensure uninterrupted power to critical departments, including emergency rooms, surgical units, intensive care units, and neonatal wards. Notably, large and critical medical institutions are equipped with 4 to 7 generators.

Since 2022, medical institutions have received 106 donated generators.

Concurrently, with funding from the state budget and support from development partners, extensive modernization projects have been undertaken. These projects have included: façade renovations, window and door replacements, wall, floor, and roof insulation, interior repairs, upgrades to heating and ventilation systems, and replacements of heating pipes and hot water distribution systems. Major repairs and renovations have also been conducted at public health centers and pre-hospital emergency medical substations.

In the past two years, significant projects have been implemented to transition to renewable energy sources. As a result, 10 district hospitals have installed photovoltaic panels, with funding from the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme, and the Government of the Republic of Korea. Currently, solar panel installations are being finalized at two other medical institutions: the Republican Clinical Hospital "Timofei Moșneaga" and the Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Health. These two projects are implemented with the financial support of the Government of the Czech Republic.
