Deputies about the national defense strategy of the Republic of Moldova for 2024-2034
The national defense strategy of the Republic of Moldova for 2024-2034 presented today by the Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatîi, in the plenary session of the Parliament, sparked acid replies between deputies. The dispute highlighted the differences of opinion regarding the country's neutrality and the qualification of the Russian Federation as an aggressor state. The Minister of Defense, Anatolie Nosatîi, said that "Russia wants to prevent our country from defending its national interests, as well as to reduce the state's capacity to promote its strategic objectives". On the other hand, the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Vlad Bătrîncea, said that "these voluntarist interpretations are ridiculous, but also dangerous".
The National Defense Strategy of the Republic of Moldova reflects the firm determination of the state to ensure a defense and security system that guarantees the prosperity of the citizen, Anatolie Nosatîi said in the Legislative plenary session. Also, the official said that “the continuation of the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the possible expansion of the zone of military actions towards the borders of the Republic of Moldova would represent a direct threat to our state”.
“The illegal presence of the military forces of the Russian Federation on the territory of the Republic of Moldova poses difficulties for the legal functioning and international recognition of this state. Moreover, the status of neutrality does not impede the continuous development of cooperation with partner states and organizations in the field of security and defense”, said Anatolie Nosatîi.
BCS deputy Fiodor Gagauz did not see any justification for including the Russian Federation in the category of “aggressor” states, and his naming of the Russian army as the second most powerful in the world sparked laughter in the plenary session. “You, without any justification, call Russia a threat. In this regard, the main objective of the strategy is to create the conditions to defend ourselves from the Russian Federation. Question: Do you believe that the Moldovan army with its current potential is ready to resist the second most powerful army in the world?”, asked Fiodor Gagauz.
At the same time, the Minister of Defense was asked, in the plenary session of the Parliament, “how long will the Republic of Moldova resist the aggression of the Russian Federation, if the Russian army attacks the territory of our country”. The question was addressed to him by the socialist deputy, Adrian Albu. In response, Nosatîi told him that “the defense component is an important area in any state”.
"We can count on the fingers how many states do not have an army, but have another defense system, so that the state is protected, so that citizens have stability, security and peace. The dangers come from the analysis of the security environment and probable threats to the security of the state. In our case, we are talking about the Russian Federation, whose activities we have seen over the years, to prevent the Republic of Moldova from advancing in its democratic processes, development for the good and interests of the country, Nosatîi said.
PAS deputy Vadim Grădinaru said that he was amazed to hear from the opposition that the Russian Federation is called an aggressor state "unreasonably": "Unreasonably" hundreds and thousands of people are killed, "unjustly" city clinics and schools are destroyed, "unjustly" energy systems are destroyed, including those that affect the lives of citizens of the Republic of Moldova", concluded Grădinaru.
We remind you that the project was voted on by 56 deputies. The new strategy aims to strengthen a modern and efficient defense system, adapted to current security challenges.
