Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away at the age of 100, as reported by the American media.
The former U.S. leader, who celebrated his 100th birthday in October, was a prominent figure in international politics and a strong advocate for human rights.
Born in Georgia, Jimmy Carter had a remarkable political career, rising from governor of his home state to the presidency of the United States. Carter became president in 1977, at a time of significant challenges for the country. His presidency was defined by his commitment to human rights and diplomacy, including the Camp David Accords, which resulted in a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
However, his presidency was marred by the economic crisis of the late 1970s, which led to rising unemployment and inflation, as well as the Iran hostage crisis, which eroded public confidence in his administration. Carter was unable to secure a second term, losing the 1980 election to Republican Ronald Reagan.
After his presidency, Jimmy Carter became actively involved in humanitarian work and promoting peace. He founded the Carter Center, through which he advocated for democracy, global health, and conflict resolution. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his continued efforts in service to humanity.
Carter was also a strong advocate for human rights and played a crucial role in mediating several international conflicts. His final international mission took place in 2013, when he served as an observer for Nepal's parliamentary elections.
Jimmy Carter was the first U.S. president to choose to be known by his familiar name, "Jimmy," saying that he preferred it to reflect his humble origins. He also set a longevity record, becoming the oldest former U.S. president in history. After leaving the White House, seven presidential administrations passed, and Carter became a silent witness to the changes in American politics.
In recent years, Jimmy Carter's health declined, and in February 2023, his family announced that the former president had chosen to receive hospice care at home. Despite this, he remained a respected and admired figure, leaving behind a lasting legacy in politics and philanthropy.
