Moldova extends wheat, corn, and sunflower import restrictions
The Government has approved the extension of the wheat, corn, and sunflower import restrictions until June 30, 2025, in the Republic of Moldova.
The continued regulation of these imports aims to protect local farmers and maintain the stability of the domestic agricultural market, in the face of existing challenges in the agrifood sector.
"This measure continues the regime applied in previous periods and provides a stable framework for protecting the domestic market and local producers, helping to maintain economic balance and ensuring a stable and competitive price for local products. Additionally, the provisions will support farmers' incomes and assist processors who rely on local raw materials, such as sunflower seeds, wheat, and corn," said Ludmila Catlabuga, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry.
The licensing system for wheat, corn, and sunflower imports was introduced in October 2023. The system has prevented a surplus of imports, particularly from Ukraine, at significantly lower prices, which could have undermined the value of local products.
Furthermore, the system has ensured priority access for processing companies to local raw materials, allowing farmers to sell their products at competitive prices, thus protecting their incomes and investments.
According to data from early December 2024, stocks of wheat, corn, and sunflower are sufficient to meet all domestic needs for the coming months: wheat – 290,000 tons, corn – 662,000 tons, sunflower – 249,600 tons.
