Tragic shooting in Cetinje, Montenegro: 12 killed in bar attack
Twelve people were killed when a man opened fire at a bar near the town of Cetinje, Montenegro.
The attacker then walked into the street and started shooting at passersby. Among the victims were the two children of the bar's owner, who was also killed, stated Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic. Several others were injured during the attack, reports BBC.
According to the TV channel Vijesti TV, an altercation occurred at the bar before the incident. Police believe the attack stemmed from a domestic conflict, not a mafia-related feud, according to the dpa news agency.
The attacker, a 45-year-old man, tried to take his own life near his home in Cetinje. He died from his injuries while being transported to the hospital, stated Minister Saranovic.
Following the tragedy, Montenegrin authorities declared January 2, 3, and 4 as national days of mourning. Prime Minister Miloiko Spajic described the event as "a terrible tragedy" in a televised address.
The dpa news agency points out that in Montenegro and other Balkan countries, many people possess unlicensed firearms.
Cetinje, a former capital of Montenegro with a population of approximately 14,000, was the site of a similar tragedy in August 2022, when another attacker killed 10 people before being shot by a passerby.
