Moldova secures electricity supply for January 3 despite rising demand

Energocom has confirmed that Moldova’s electricity consumption for January 3 will be fully covered, despite an estimated 10% rise in demand compared to the previous day.

The required supply will be met through local production, renewable energy, and imports from Romania.

In addition to energy generated by the heating plants in Chișinău and Bălți, as well as renewable sources, imports from Romania and purchases from the OPCOM energy market will ensure sufficient supply for January 3.

Energy consumption in the first days of the year

On January 1 and 2, Moldova’s electricity consumption was fully met without resorting to emergency contracts. According to official data, the energy supply was sourced as follows:

Energy Sources in Moldova

Energy Sources in Moldova

Imports from Romania – 49.27%
SA "Termoelectrica" – 30.37%
Renewable sources – 12.42%
SA "CET-Nord" – 5.61%
Costești Hydroelectric Plant – 1.46%

Impact of the halt in electricity deliveries from Cuciurgan Power Plant (MGRES)

The halt in electricity deliveries from the Cuciurgan Power Plant (MGRES) to the right bank of the Nistru River, effective January 1, 2025, has necessitated the use of alternative sources to meet demand. In the Transnistrian region, MGRES, which runs on coal and has estimated reserves for 30 to 50 days, remains the primary energy source.
