Ukraine intercepts 37,000 Russian drones amid relentless attacks
Russia continues to carry out massive attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure with multiple kamikaze drones.
Meanwhile, on the frontlines, fierce battles are underway for strategic points like Pokrovsk, which Kremlin forces are trying to flank. Ukrainian naval units, tallying the number of Russian drones downed in 2024, reported that the total has surpassed 37,000. In addition, the Ukrainian navy has destroyed several of the aggressor’s ships and hundreds of smaller boats.
The Ukrainian regions of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk were targeted in intense attacks by Russian forces. They employed both kamikaze drones and various types of missiles. In Stepnogorsk, Zaporizhzhia, a multi-story building was leveled by a KAB-guided bomb. Local authorities reported that at least one person was killed and several others injured.
On January 2nd, Russia launched more than a hundred unmanned aerial vehicles. Debris from a downed drone struck residential buildings in Kyiv, sparking several fires. The mayor of Kyiv confirmed that two people were killed and seven others injured.
“There was a deafening noise, and the blast blew out all the windows. Every day we live in fear and grief. Everyone is emotionally devastated, and Russia is to blame for all of it.”
The National Bank of Ukraine stated in a release that one of its buildings was damaged by debris from a downed drone. Several non-residential buildings were also damaged, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded on social media, stating, “Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia was focused solely on how to harm Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, Ukrainian naval units have assessed the number of Russian drones intercepted last year. According to the report, more than 37,000 unmanned aerial vehicles launched by the Kremlin were destroyed in 2024, including attack drones, operational and tactical UAVs, first-person-view drones, and Shahed-type drones. Ukrainian naval forces reported that they also destroyed five Russian ships and 458 smaller boats.
