Nicu Popescu and Urmas Reinsalu talk about the changes in the Moldovan Government: "It is a transition that has been planned"

The resignation of the Gavrilita government was pre-planned, says acting Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu. Speaking by phone with Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, the official said that the new government that would take over would be a pro-European one with a clear objective - accession to the European Union.

Government reshuffles in Moldova and further developments were discussed by acting Foreign and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu with Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu in a phone call on Saturday.

"I told the minister that this is a planned transition, from one pro-European government to another, being a process that has been in preparation for some time with the aim of strengthening our country's security and resilience against the backdrop of Russia's brutal war against Ukraine," Nicu Popescu wrote on his Telegram channel.

The official assured that the new MFAEI team, together with Prime Minister-designate Dorin Recean,"will continue to focus on the same priority objectives: accession to the European Union, the systemic reforms requested by citizens as well as on our country's contribution to regional stability."

Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița resigned from office on Friday 10 February, after almost a year and a half in office. On the same day, President Maia Sandu appointed current presidential advisor Dorin Recean as her candidate for prime minister. He is expected to seek a vote of confidence from Parliament on his work programme and the entire government list within 15 days after his appointment.

The Law on the Government stipulates that the resignation of the Prime Minister automatically entails the resignation of the entire cabinet of ministers. In accordance with constitutional provisions, the programme of activities and the list of the new Government should be debated in Parliament. The legislature grants confidence to the executive by a majority vote of the elected deputies.
