Moldova and Ukraine unite to tackle Transnistrian energy crisis

Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have agreed to collaborate on solutions to address the escalating humanitarian and energy crisis in the Transnistrian region.

The crisis stems from Gazprom's decision to halt natural gas supplies starting January 1, leaving thousands without heating, electricity, and, in some cases, clean water during freezing temperatures.

In a phone call, the two leaders discussed measures to mitigate the impact of the crisis, including the use of alternative energy sources like coal. Zelensky accused Russia of weaponising energy resources to destabilise Moldova and pledged Ukraine’s support.

Analysts suggest that Ukraine's involvement could counter Kremlin propaganda blaming Chișinău for the crisis. Moldova has indicated support for Ukraine’s potential initiative to aid the region, aiming to prevent further humanitarian deterioration. Officials emphasise the importance of cooperation to maintain stability and protect citizens, aligning with Moldova’s European integration aspirations.
