Moldovan Railways cancels train routes amid financial crisis

Moldovan Railways (Calea Ferată a Moldovei, CFM) has announced the cancellation of two suburban train routes due to severe financial difficulties that make it impossible to maintain operations.

Starting January 12, the Chișinău-Bender and Bălți-Rogojeni routes will be canceled. From January 13, there will be no train services from Bender to Chișinău or from Rogojeni to Bălți.

The financial situation at Moldovan Railways worsened after August 2022, as transit from Ukraine decreased with the reopening of the Odessa port. Since then, railway employees have faced delays of several months in receiving their salaries. The company’s losses are estimated to exceed 180 million lei.

Several CFM employees have gone six months without receiving their wages. Workers at the Ghidighici station received their July wages only in December. The workers express desperation, stating that pursuing legal action is their only remaining option.
