The population informed on how to avoid drowning near water pools

With fluctuating temperatures and the formation of fragile ice pods in some parts of the country's rivers and lakes, posing a danger to human life, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations has carried out drowning prevention activities in several districts of the country during this cold season. Thus, IGSU employees went to the banks of rivers and lakes in the country, where they told citizens about the risk of being on the thin ice of water basins.

The IGSU said rescuers urged fishermen to avoid angling or walking on the water basins, as the thickness of the ice was very thin and posed an imminent danger to their lives. Moreover, people were informed that skiing and skating on the ice of the water ponds was forbidden if the layer does not exceed 8-10 cm.

Specialists also came up with recommendations for people looking after minors, as they are most at risk of falling. Parents have been warned not to let their children play on the ice, and to avoid tragedies, adults have been asked to prohibit minors from carrying out any activities near lakes and rivers.

At the end, rescuers handed out information leaflets with measures to prevent drowning and incidents near water pools, as well as leaflets with instructions on how to get out of the ice in case of a collapse. Furthermore, the fire brigade urged people to urgently call 112 if they noticed people falling under the ice.
