Energy security boost with Vulcănești-Chișinău power line
The deadline for completing and commissioning the Vulcănești-Chișinău high-voltage power line is December of this year, while the Chișinău Electric Station is expected to be finished by August.
The announcement was made on Thursday during a Government meeting convened by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, with the participation of the project implementer, construction companies, and other involved institutions.
The Prime Minister emphasized the strategic importance of this infrastructure project for the country’s energy security, considering the current regional realities, and urged all parties involved to mobilize and prevent any delays in the project timeline. "Once the Vulcănești-Chișinău power line is operational, we will be able to transport electricity without passing through the MGRES energy hub, thus depriving Russia of its last tool for energy blackmail against our country," Prime Minister Dorin Recean stressed.
Moreover, the Prime Minister requested that the construction companies submit an updated work schedule and report their weekly progress to the Ministry of Energy and the Unified Unit for the Implementation and Monitoring of Energy Projects (UCIPE).
Representatives of UCIPE and the Ministry of Energy will conduct weekly or bi-weekly visits to the construction/modernization/expansion sites under the Energy Sector Development Program (PDSE) to track progress.
The overall progress of the LEA construction stands at about 49%, with around 190 foundations and 30 pylons assembled out of a total of 500, and the construction site spans approximately 65 kilometers.
Construction work officially began in April 2024, after the technical project was developed and approved, and the preparatory conditions were completed. These works are taking place in the Gagauz autonomy, in the districts of Leova, Cahul, and Taraclia. The materials and components needed for the LEA construction have been produced and delivered, covering 90% of the required volume.
According to UCIPE, the work is ongoing, with the assembly of 50 additional pylons planned for the winter months. However, the pace of work is dependent on weather conditions, and the planning of work and on-site teams will be adjusted according to the agreed work schedule, with the LEA expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
