Moscow pleads for the resumption of negotiations in the "5+2" format. Oleg Vasnetsov: We will be looking for a fair solution to the Transnistrian problem

The Russian Federation calls for the resumption of negotiations in the "5+2" format saying it will continue to seek "a just solution" to the Transnistrian dispute. The Russian ambassador in Chisinau, Oleg Vasnetsov, made these statements in an interview with the Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

"As I have already said, the Russian Federation is the guarantor of the Transnistrian settlement. This status imposes a great responsibility, and the Russian side acts with full awareness of this. (...) We will continue to contribute to the search for a just solution to the Transnistrian problem, to the implementation of agreements on the special, reliable, guaranteed status of Transnistria, while respecting the sovereignty and ensuring the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. (...) The Russian Federation continues to look forward to the early continuation of negotiations on the Transnistrian settlement," Oleg Vasnetsov told the source.

Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian has repeatedly said that the "5+2" negotiating format would remain frozen for the duration of the military hostilities in Ukraine. The latest statements to this effect by the official in Chisinau were recently made during a meeting with the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Moldova, Gudsi Osmanov.

The US ambassador to Moldova, Kent Logsdon, recently urged Chisinau and Tiraspol to talk directly until the resumption of negotiations in the "5+2" format, which "the United States continues to support".

Negotiations in the "5+2" format last took place in Bratislava in 2019 and have been put on hold. In the context of the events in Ukraine, Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that progress in the negotiations was possible only after the situation in the neighbouring country is resolved.
